Another day, another news cycle dominated by LSU's roster construction. Will Wade landed commitments from RJ Luis and Saliou Niang yesterday, and not without controversy.
Luis spent last year in the G-League after turning down a lucrative offer to play his senior season at St. John's. Because he signed a two-way contract, he is not eligible under current NCAA rules. Luis' case will rely heavily on the fact that he never actually played in any G-League or NBA games due to injury. The expectation is that he and LSU will file a lawsuit to allow him to play - a similar, yet unsuccessful route that Charles Bediako and Alabama took last season. The open defiance of precedent led to this heated rant from Field of 68's Jeff Goodman.
Niang's commitment is less controversial and more likely to end with him suiting up for the Tigers this season. Niang was drafted 58th overall in last year's NBA Draft, but never signed an NBA contract and spent all of last season playing overseas. At 22 years old, he fits the mold of several other international prospects who were eligible to play this season. Niang averaged 7.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game with Virtus Bologna in the Italian Lega Basket Serie A.
Here's an updated look at LSU's roster for next season:

In NBA Draft news, Michigan forward Morez Johnson Jr. announced he is keeping his name in the draft and forgoing his college eligibility. Johnson is a projected first round pick after an impressive combine performance and starting all 40 games of Michigan's national championship run. He joins teammates Aday Mara and Yaxel Lendeborg as potential first rounders for the Wolverines.
Several other draft prospects are expected to announce their intentions in the coming days. The deadline to withdraw and maintain college eligibility is May 27.
