Billy Donovan will be back on the sidelines next year, but not as a head coach.
The former Chicago Bulls coach is headed to San Antonio as the Spurs' lead assistant. It's the first time Donovan will coach in an assistant role since he worked for Rick Pitino at Kentucky in 1994.
Donovan, 61, stepped away from the Bulls in April looking for a fresh start. He's been linked to several college jobs over the years, including the one at North Carolina this spring, but has consistently opted to remain in the NBA. It's likely he'll still get brought up for premier college opportunities, but his latest move to San Antonio aligns with his willingness to stay in the professional ranks.
Sorry, Texas Southern, another potential option is off the board.
