It’s the Fourth of July and Outback Steakhouse is swamped. Dishes clank, chatter is loud, workers run and work, not losing their composure. All the while, Chris Wright isn’t breaking a sweat while handling his business.
“What’s wrong with you, man?” Wright’s manager said with a smirk, "You're so calm.”
“If us being too busy in a restaurant is stressful,” Wright replied, “Man, I’m in a lot of trouble with my day-to-day job. I think we’ll be alright today.”
While the rest of the waiters were working summer jobs before their high school or college semesters started, Wright was 34 and ended up here as a result of the cruelty of small-college basketball. He was set to take the head coaching job at NAIA Central Baptist College in Conway, Arkansas, but his pay–which was $31,000 a year–wasn't set to start until August.
