Mike Boynton had his interim tag removed on Friday, signing a two-year deal to become Michigan's permanent head coach.
The move provides clarity on the Wolverines' coaching situation, at least in the near term, after Boynton convinced all but one player on the current roster to stay with the team. LJ Cason is the lone holdout who hasn't made his decision publicly known.
Boynton joined Dusty May's staff in 2024 and was tabbed as the team's defensive coordinator. He spent the previous seven seasons as the head coach at Oklahoma State, where he went 119-109 and made one NCAA Tournament appearance. The short-term nature of the deal gives Boynton an opportunity to prove himself while also providing the university with a buyout-friendly contract should it not pan out.
The timing is also critical because of a report that surfaced Sunday night regarding the status of athletic director Warde Manuel. Michigan's Board of Regents is set to meet Thursday to discuss the findings of a recent investigation into the athletic department's culture. A decision on Manuel's future with the school could come as early as this week.
Gonzaga starting point guard Mario Saint-Supery announced he is leaving the team to play for Valencia, a Spanish EuroLeague squad.
The move reportedly blindsided the Gonzaga staff, who have already lost a recruit to the NBA Draft earlier this summer. Saint-Supery is set to make north of $15 million on a four-year deal with Valencia. The Bulldogs are now left scrambling to fill another hole in their backcourt in the middle of July.
