Grand Canyon head coach Bryce Drew is taking full advantage of the newly eligible crop of players, adding two more high-major transfers on Thursday.
The Lopes landed commitments from NC State transfer Tre Holloman and Baylor transfer Dan Skillings, bolstering a roster that was already one of the best in the Mountain West. Holloman averaged 9.2 points on 40% shooting from three for the Wolfpack last season, while Skillings averaged 9.4 points and 5.7 rebounds for the Bears.
Grand Canyon missed the NCAA Tournament last year, their first season in the Mountain West. With half the league departing to the revived PAC-12, GCU is in a position to usurp power in the conference and is sparing no expense. The Lopes have made the tournament in four of Bryce Drew's six seasons in Phoenix.
In 5-in-5 news, the ACC and Mountain West adopted policies prohibiting former professionals from returning to college sports. Big East athletic directors met, but are maintaining the "status quo" for now.
A judge in Dallas granted a TRO to several athletes from different sports, giving them eligibility for the upcoming season. The lawsuit specifically names the NCAA, SEC, and Greg Sankey as defendants. Notable college basketball athletes include CJ Gunn, Rylan Griffen, and Riley Kugel.
Vince Iwuchukwu is returning to Georgetown after being granted a fifth year of eligibility via a lawsuit in New York.
Marquette signed Liberty transfer Colin Porter. Illinois signed Arizona State transfer Quentin McCoy.
Texas A&M guard Bryson Warren entered the transfer portal after the SEC implemented rules prohibiting former professional athletes. Warren previously signed Exhibit 10 contracts with the Miami Heat and New York Knicks.
