Vanderbilt is turning heads on the recruiting trail under head coach Mark Byington.

The Commodores landed a commitment from 2027 top-20 overall recruit Gabe Nesmith on Tuesday. Nesmith is the third-highest-ranked recruit in program history behind Simi Shittu and Darius Garland.

Nesmith is widely regarded as one of the top scorers in the 2027 class. The 6'5" small forward averaged 19 points, four rebounds and three assists per game on the EYBL circuit for Nightrydas Elite. Nesmith is the first pickup of the class for Mark Byington, who is building momentum on the trail following back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.

After losing Tevon Saddler to the Capital City Go-Go, Nicholls has already found his replacement. The Colonels are hiring Texas A&M-Texarkana head coach Darion Brown, per a release from the school.

Brown went 40-22 over the last two seasons as a head coach and returns to Nicholls, where he was previously an assistant under Austin Claunch.

"I'm incredibly grateful to be back home," Brown said. "Nearly four years ago, I left this place feeling like there was still unfinished business. From that moment on, I always believed I'd have the opportunity to return and help build something special."

The quick hire means Texas Southern is the only school left without an official head coach. Assistant Shyrone Chatman is still serving as interim head coach.
