Basket Under Review

It was a slow weekend in the college hoops world, so we're starting the week with a coaching carousel breakdown from Trilly Donovan.

The 2025-2026 cycle gave us 55 coaching changes at the Division I level. Here's what the landscape looks like going into this season:

With record turnover over the last few seasons, the number of true hot seats is fairly low. That said, the "old guys/liable to retire at any time" section is ripe with possibilities and potential dominoes that could make for an active cycle. Florida and UConn would make up a hypothetical "liable to leave for the NBA" category, which could also create some chaos next spring.

The "spent a lot of money so needs to meet/exceed expectations category or people will be mad" category is pretty self-explanatory. We're not anticipating any of these coaches to get fired this season, but at minimum all three teams need to make the tournament and win a few games to calm rabid fan bases.

The "someone should hire these guys" section is our version of the jump seat list. Saint Louis' Josh Schertz will likely be the belle of the ball again this cycle, with New Mexico's Eric Olen and George Mason's Tony Skinn also likely to garner a ton of high-major interest.

We're 48 days out from opening night, around the time when Bruce Pearl retired last season. Are there any more surprises in store before we tip off?
