There are a few hours until Queens starts practice when Grant Leonard steps in front of his Sports Governance class. When he does, his reputation as an adjunct professor precedes him.
Leonard was generally liked by students, but was known back then as a no-nonsense professor around Queens’ campus. All the labels that could be assigned to a professor who also coaches couldn’t be given to Leonard. What happened in the classroom was serious business to him, and he felt as if he had to approach his time there in a certain way if he was going to make a real impact on his students.
As a result, he resorted to tough love at times.
“There was no bulls***,” Then-Queens head coach Bart Lundy–who is now the head coach at UW Milwaukee–said. “If you didn’t do the work, he wasn’t one of those coaches that was handing out grades. You had to earn what you got.”
