Bryan Hodgson hates that this is the truth, but he’s never been one to hold back from sharing his opinion. So, here goes. Poor kids often get picked on, he says. That, he feels, isn’t merely an opinion. It’s a factual, indisputable reality.
He’s just pointing out the obvious.
Hodgson knows because he once lived in poverty as a foster kid before he was taken in by Larry and Rebecca Hodgson–a couple that welcomed a total of 114 children into their home. He remembers being picked on himself.
He was the outlier. He never had name-brand clothes. Some years, his family couldn’t afford new school clothes at all. He didn’t look like the rest of his family because he was adopted, either. Other kids were quick to point out everything that made him different.
The thought of Hodgson–who possesses a larger-than-life, loquacious personality these days–being picked on in school almost doesn’t register. But the experience is an unavoidable part of his story.
“Kids are cruel, man,” Hodgson told Basket Under Review. “You learn to build a tough exterior.”
