The next wave of conference realignment is on its way.
James Madison will join the American Conference no later than July 1, 2028, the conference and school announced Monday.

The Dukes have been in the Sun Belt since moving up to FBS football in 2022. Sources tell Basket Under Review the school is trying to expedite its move to the American, with a real chance the transition is made next year.
The timing is significant as the Sun Belt planned to meet this week to discuss raising its exit fees. James Madison is expected to spend north of $20 million in fees to exit the Sun Belt and enter the American. The school's athletic budget is already $18 million more than the average American athletic department.
ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that no other additions to the league are imminent, but the league is likely preparing for Memphis and South Florida's eventual departures.
