We're wrapping up the first week of August with more transfer portal commitments.
Texas transfer Chendall Weaver wasted no time taking advantage of his newfound eligibility. The 6'3" senior committed to Houston after a Tennessee judge ruled he could play college basketball for a fifth season. Weaver is a defensive stalwart who will fit perfectly in Kelvin Sampson's program.
Gonzaga landed their second commitment this week with the addition of Florida State transfer Chauncey Wiggins. Wiggins was part of the successful lawsuit in Georgia that also granted eligibility to RJ Godfrey, Jamichael Stillwell and several others. The Zags are getting another frontcourt piece to supplement Braden Huff and Massamba Diop.
Several more fifth-year commitments are expected over the next few weeks. While there's no official deadline for athletes to choose a team, they do need to be enrolled before the end of the drop/add period of whichever school they choose.
On the Senate floor, the Protect College Sports Act hit more roadblocks.
The Congressional Black Caucus released a statement saying it cannot support the bill in its current form.
“No legislation that disproportionately affects Black athletes should move through Congress without meaningful participation from the communities it will most directly affect."
The Caucus was a key voice in the failure of the first iteration of the bill last year.
In addition to the CBC's statement, Senators Josh Hawley, Jim Banks and Tommy Tuberville filed an amendment to the Protect College Sports Act to “ensure the bill does not overturn any state laws banning men from women’s sports.”
The amendment adds more hurdles and another legislative step to the bill before it can be officially voted on. Senator Majority Leader John Thune indicated a vote may not happen before Friday's pre-recess deadline.
