After most collegiate teams have now played one official game, we should know everything about everyone, right?
Well, maybe not, but that doesn't mean we can't start to glean things from the results of opening week. Some things may end up being true, others will look entirely different come March. These are some things that caught my eye, though, as things that could end up being really real.
Illinois Offense
Is Illinois offense real??? Well, they were the number one offense heading into the season, and they dropped 120 points in their first game, but I don't think many people had questions about their production anyways.
What's interesting though is just how they actually scored those 120 points against FDU.
Last season, Illinois had the #2 KenPom offense while running 31 pick and rolls per game, including shots that resulted in passes out of pick and rolls. They ran a pick and roll on nearly 40% of their possessions, the 10th highest in the country, while also being the 7th most efficient pick and roll offense.
Against FDU to open this season, Illinois ran a total of three pick-and-rolls, and all of them resulted in kickout threes, meaning Illinois didn't score a single point from pick-and-roll ball handlers or rollers all game.
120 points, and Illinois didn't utilize on-ball screening for the entirety of the game.
