There's always that team.
The team that on paper, looks incredibly solid, has all the necessary pieces to compete, but for some reason is a little bit over looked.
This year, that team might just be Baylor.
The Bears were picked to finish third in the Big 12 and started the year as No. 16 in the AP Poll. They've been overshadowed by the star power that TCU has in Olivia Miles or what Iowa State holds in Audi Crooks.
They're getting respect, but just don't seem to be talked about enough.
Baylor opened the season in Paris as part of the Oui-Play event and defeated a Duke team that found its way to the Elite 8 last season.
The Blue Devils were the favorites heading into the contest, but in the second half, they looked stumped offensively, and had no answer for Taliah Scott.
Scott gave Bears fans quite the introduction in her first game wearing the Baylor uniform. The former Auburn Tiger and Arkansas Razorback finished the game with 24 points, five rebounds and three assists.
"We were executing our offense and we just got good stuff," Scott said. "And credit to my teammates for getting me open, setting me up.”
Scott will be one of the focal points for Nicki Collen this season, any successful team doesn’t rely on just one player. Baylor has the key word — depth.
It went out in got it in the offseason.
"We added scoring with Yuting Deng and Taliah Scott," Collen said. "We needed depth in the post, which we got with [Kiersten Johnson], and then just energy. I think with Marcayla Johnson, our freshman, and Kiera Pemberton, transfer from North Dakota, we added a lot of energy."
The transfer portal has also tested teams’ ability to maintain continuity. It’s become a revolving door, but Baylor has kept a solid foundation.
Bella Fontleroy, Darianna Littlepage-Buggs and Jana Van Gytenbeek have been at the forefront of it all. They're the steady presence that understands Baylor basketball.
“I think this team’s definitely going to surprise a lot of people,” Littlepage-Buggs said. “We have returning players, but we also have a lot of new ones, and I think all of our different talents are going to mesh together. It’s going to be amazing.”
The ability to make it work also takes a certain type of person that Collen is intentional about recruiting.
"The people we bring in, like coach Nicki always says, people person. I think that's just something that's stuck with us over the years. She doesn't recruit people that aren't people people," Littlepage-Buggs said.
Baylor may not be the loudest or flashiest team in the country, but it’s one that looks built for the long haul. Between Collen’s steady leadership, a mix of veteran presence, and the spark from transfers like Scott, the Bears have the ingredients to make noise in March.
"Truthfully, I just want to win," Littlepage-Buggs said. "I want to get every bucket. I want to do everything that I can to just help my team. And I just think that since freshman year, it's just something they've instilled in me."
It's going to be hard to ignore them for much longer. This team is bound to make it past the round of 32 this year.
It has all of the right pieces that people may or may not be aware of yet. The ones that can compete with the best.
Sooner or later, chatter while pick up about Baylor.
